Chick Care

Chick care can be confusing, especially with so many mixed methods out there of what is best. Let’s break it down in the simplest sense. Chicks are just like plants in springtime. They start out in a shell which needs heat and water to grow. After they’ve sprouted (or hatched) they will need to be given proper nutrients, water, and kept somewhere warm until they are developed enough to be placed in the outdoor elements. If you’ve just gotten chicks you’ll need a couple of essentials; waterer, feeder, heat, and brooder box.

There is a company which I really love, Rentacoop. They have an amazing mission to normalize chicken education and did I mention they have equally amazing products?! I have tried out quite a few chick feeders and waterers, but nothing compares. You can tell every item that they sell has been carefully considered because it shows.

Realistically anything that you have around the house can be used. I have done cardboard boxes, plastic tubs, rubber horse troughs, quite literally anything. What you should consider though is that these chicks will be able to fly, SOON. So, having to move them five times into five different things is going to get old really quick. The best option I have seen is honestly a wire dog kennel. Collapses down to flat when not in use, just line the bottom with those indoor puppy pads and you are in business. Chance are you might even already have one at your home.
