Hey There

Join me in sharing our journey towards a sustainable homestead through chicken farming, sourdough baking, hunting, gardening, food preserving, winemaking, and everything in between at Hastie Hen Farm on Whidbey Island, WA.

All About Me

If you had told me that the year 2020 would begin thoughts of writing about all our farming and homestead adventures I would have laughed. I am not a writer nor did I have the "spare" time to do all of that, yet here I am. With that being said I would say it's time for an introduction.

I grew up at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. I spent my childhood involved in horses, cattle, and rodeos. I would be willing to wager that part of my sense of responsibility and hard work was gathered from this time in my life. From 10 years old up my family lived on a 60 acre ranch, at most we had about ten horses in our care. I remember the weekends spent loading and unloading a trailer full of hay with my Dad and having to go out to feed and check water every morning before school.

I left home at a young age to serve in the Navy. I was stationed in Florida, Virginia, and Washington stateside and traveled to Guam, Japan, and the Philippines while deployed. After my military service I was able to enjoy three years finishing up my education and working from home. During that time my husband and I had our two children. I never managed to make it far away from the government hold though even now in a civilian role.

The other half of my day is spent around the house. We purchased and renovated a home in 2020, since then the projects have been constant. Our acreage requires continuous care and we are slowly molding it into all that we want our homestead to provide. We have a half acre garden filled with fruit trees, flowers, and vegetables. About fifty chickens share in the love and we have a handful of friends who receive eggs from us weekly.

Our journey is ours, but we are happy to share our knowledge and have you along for the ride.
